Obama OMG

I just cried for the five hundredth time in the last 24 hours. It started last night when I saw Jesse Jackson openly weep. After a few hours of fitful sleep, I resumed blubbering this morning when I heard Diane Sawyer comment on how poised Sasha & Malia were last night. And just now these pictures triggered the waterworks. It’s so incredible, I’m still unable to articulate how I feel. I’m overflowing with pride and so moved by the images of people cheering their hearts out in a manner typically reserved for sporting events.

For such a tremendously diverse nation to be united in this way restores my faith in our democracy. I heard a journalist last night talk about how amazing it was for the voting process to unfold in the relatively civilized manner it did and how that is a testament to the power of democracy. I feel so blessed to live in a country where that is possible.

And Obama’s victory speech? I bawled the entire time, especially when he said this:

“And to all those who have wondered if America’s beacon still burns as bright – tonight we proved once more that the true strength of our nation comes not from the might of our arms or the scale of our wealth, but from the enduring power of our ideals: democracy, liberty, opportunity, and unyielding hope.”

The thought that we’ve taken another step in righting the wrongs of prejudice that blight the history of the United States. The celebration of our commonalities, rather than our differences. To think of the innumerable doors that swung open as a result of this growth. Feeling the tremendous energy of a nation’s hope renewed. It’s all so much to process – my heart is bursting!
